Welcome! I am a historian of modern Africa and Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York (CUNY). I completed my PhD in History at Yale University in December 2009 and I have taught history, African studies, and human rights at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and Webster University. I currently am the Director of Graduate Studies for the Human Rights MA Program and the Social Entrepreneurship Advanced Certificate and I am the Faculty Director of the Ron & Kerry Moelis Social Entrepreneurship Program at John Jay-CUNY. My research has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Program, the Social Science Research Council, the American Association of University Women, the American Philosophical Society, the American Historical Association, the CUNY Research Foundation, and the CUNY Black, Race and Ethnic Studies Initiative Council.

My book, entitled, Faith, Power and Family: Christianity and Social Change in French Cameroon, which was published by James Currey in 2018, was a finalist for the 2019 Albert J. Raboteau Prize for Best Book in Africana Religions. The work explores religious and cultural change among African societies living under French rule between World War I and World War II.

My current book project examines policing and security in colonial and post-colonial Chad and Central Africa. The project has been funded with grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the CUNY BRESI Council.

In 2015, I published Corporate Social Responsibility? Human Rights in the New Global Economy (University of Chicago Press, 2015), with John D. Kelly, which examines human rights politics as a means to understand distinctive new forms of corporate and economic activity in Africa and the world.

I enjoy teaching undergraduate surveys in African history as well as more specialized courses on the history of Christianity, war and conflict in Africa, and the history of human rights.
